Main Instructor, Carlos Mendez became a Police Officer in 2007 and served until 2013 when he focused all of his attention to sharing Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai to Southeast Ohio and serve the community in a different role.

With his experience and observations, it became clear to him that LEO's needed a specific type of training that would keep them safe, and give them more confidence, improving all aspects of their profession. A realistic, hands on training which addresses what a resisting and combative suspect would do.

He is a firm believer in the following quotes:

"An untrained Police Officer is an accident waiting to happen" Rener Gracie

“Failure to train is training to fail”

At ONE Academy—Athens, our defensive tactics system incorporates time-tested techniques into an easy to learn system designed to help officers humanely prevail against larger and stronger opponents. The One Academy Defensive Tactics (OADT) is a complete system designed for Law Enforcement professionals with techniques derived from Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.

An encounter between a Law Enforcement Officer and a bad guy is vastly different from a street fight or sport Jiu-Jitsu match. With this in mind, we teach officers how to survive an attack by using Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques which are geared towards control and arrest.

All of the techniques shown are 100% law enforcement applicable and have been proven in combat by U.S. military troops around the world. One of  our requirements in this course is that everyone who gets certified trains with a duty belt. That way Officers can experience a realistic feel while applying the techniques.

Certification levels and upcoming Class dates:

OADT Level One: consists of two 6 hour training days in which we will address the most common scenarios Law Enforcement Officers are likely to experience.

OADT Level Two: This course is only for those who have been certified in Level One. We will require Officers to show proficiency, not only in applying, but also in teaching the techniques. This Level is geared for those who would like to become OADT Instructors for their particular department.

OADT Level 1 course 2024: Our next class will be held 2/24 and 2/25/2024.

OADT Level 2 course: There are no dates scheduled yet.
